di William Carlos Williams (USA 1883-1963)
If I when my wife is sleeping
and the baby and Kathleen
are sleeping
and the sun is a flame-white disc
in silken mists
above shining trees,—
if I in my north room
dance naked, grotesquely
before my mirror
waving my shirt round my head
and singing softly to myself:
“I am lonely, lonely.
I was born to be lonely,
I am best so!”
If I admire my arms, my face,
my shoulders, flanks, buttocks
against the yellow drawn shades,—
Who shall say I am not
the happy genius of my household?
Danza Russa
Quando io, mentre mia moglie dorme
e la bambina e Kathleen
dormono,
e il sole è un disco bianco-fiamma
in una nebbia di seta
sopra gli alberi splendenti –
quando io nella mia stanza del nord
danzo nudo, in modo grottesco,
davanti allo specchio,
girando la mia camicia intorno la testa
mentre canto dolcemente a me stesso:
“Sono solo, solo.
Sono nato per essere solo,
Sto bene così!”
Quando ammiro le mie braccia, il mio viso,
le mie spalle, i fianchi, il mio sedere
contro le tende gialle chiuse –
Chi potrebbe dire che non sono
il genio felice di casa mia?
