    The Hand that Signed the Paper Felled a City
    1960, Morris Gallery, New York

    ~~~~~~~~
    La mano che firmò il trattato abbatté una città;
    Cinque dita sovrane tassarono il respiro,
    Raddoppiarono il globo dei morti e dimezzarono un paese;
    Quei cinque re misero a morte un re.
    La mano possente conduce a una spalla sghimbescia,
    Il calcio rattrappisce le giunture delle dita;
    Una penna d’un’oca ha messo fine all’omicidio
    Che ha messo fine ai negoziati.
    La mano che firmò il trattato produsse una febbre.
    E la penuria crebbe, e le locuste vennero;
    Grande è la mano che ha dominio sull’uomo
    Scarabocchiando un nome.
    I cinque re contano i morti, mala piaga
    Incrostata non curano, la fronte non carezzano;
    Una mano governa la pietà come governa i cieli;
    Dalle mani non scorrono le lacrime.
    The hand that signed the paper felled a city;
    Five sovereign fingers taxed the breath,
    Doubled the globe of dead and halved a country;
    These five kings did a king to death.
    The mighty hand leads to a sloping shoulder,
    The finger joints are cramped with chalk;
    A goose’s quill has put an end to murder
    That put an end to talk.
    The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
    And famine grew, and locusts came;
    Great is the hand that holds dominion over
    Man by a scribbled name.
    The five kings count the dead but do not soften
    The crusted wound nor stroke the brow:
    A hand rules pity as a hand rules heaven;
    Hands have no tears to flow.
    Se le mani fossero invece strumenti del cuore…
    la destra del Signore ha fatto meraviglie”
