Non mi arrendo allo schiantarsi dei cuori amanti sul duro suolo.
Così è e così sarà perché così è sempre stato:
Verso il buio vanno i saggi e i gentili. Incoronati
di gigli e alloro vanno; ma io non mi arrendo.

Amanti e pensatori, scendete nella terra.
Unitevi con la polvere di tutti.

una formula, una frase, – ma il meglio è perduto.

Le risposte veloci e acute, lo sguardo sincero, il riso, l’amore.

Essere umani

Quando mia madre fu ricoverata all’ospedale
dopo essere caduta da sola in camera da letto
io stavo costruendo una casa
a diciotto miglia di distanza

Andai a trovarla più tardi
e qualcosa nel mio viso le fece dire:
“Sicuramente ti senti malissimo”
intendeva che ero sconvolto
da ciò che le era successo
ma io non sentivo quasi nulla
all’epoca, tant’è vero che
pensavo solo che avrei dovuto
fare diciotto miglia ogni giorno
per andare a trovarla e ero infastidito
In quell momento
lei aveva guardato dietro la facciata
che normalmente nasconde il viso umano
e improvvisamente comprese
che non c’era molto
affetto per lei nel mio viso
e questa certezza era
peggio delle sue ferite

Ma non è possible tornare indietro nel tempo
nulla si può fare ora
che all’epoca
non è stato fatto
Morì non molto tempo dopo
disorientata
Aveva dimenticato ciò che le era successo
ma io mi ricordo sempre di quelle ultime parole
che sono le prime sulla lista
delle mie vergogne

Dirge without music

I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground.
So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:
Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned
With lilies and with laurel they go; but I am not resigned.

Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you.
Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust.
A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew,
A formula, a phrase remains,—but the best is lost.

The answers quick and keen, the honest look, the laughter, the love,—
They are gone. They are gone to feed the roses. Elegant and curled
Is the blossom. Fragrant is the blossom. I know. But I do not approve.
More precious was the light in your eyes than all the roses in the world.

Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

On being human

When my mother went to hospital
after a fall alone in her bedroom
I was eighteen miles away
trying to build a house

I visited her later
and something in my face made her say
“I thought you’d feel terrible”
and she meant that I’d be devastated
by what had happen to her
?I wasn’t feeling anything very much
at the time and I guess it showed
just thinking I’d have to travel
those eighteen miles every day
to visit her and grumbling to myself
At the moment
she had seen behind the shutters
normally drawn across the human face
and suddenly realized
there wasn’t much if any
affection for her in my face
and that knowledge
was worse than her injuries

But there is no going back in time
to do anything about it now
if something wasn’t done then
and nothing was
She died not much later
her mind disoriented
forgetting what happened to her
but I remember those last words
list them first
among the things I’m ashamed of
as intolerable as realizing
your whole life has been wasted
?remembering my cousin’s words
about her drunken brother:
“It would have been better
if he’d never lived at all”

I remember those last words
before the fever took her mind
and the only good thing now
is thinking about those words
and she is instantly
restored to life
in my mind
and repeats the same words
“I thought you’d feel terrible”
again and again and again
and I am still ashamed
and I am still alive
