A Leper in the City
We all have the same memory
in one form or another. Mine is of
an evening not too long ago when some
volcano or escaping poison turned
the sky and all the city sidewalks green,
making my sickly and inflamed complexion
matter less. Or rather, matter more;
it was as if the people who complain
when I walk by had finally looked hard
and realized that my skin was fit to be
a blueprint for the night. I roamed the streets,
and everywhere I went, somebody had
a funny or a loving use for green –
a woman glided past in chartreuse sneakers,
a baby sucked on limes. Nobody gave
the secret callously away by lifting
me on their shoulders, shouting “ Hail the leper!”
That would have gone too far. But I was proud
and held my head so high I thought I’d touch
the green clouds any second. And of course
the next day, glib, expecting more of the same,
I saw myself reflected in a shopfront
and knew I was the same old, green old eyesore.
Faces got a foot away from me
and crinkled up in horror or relief;
tourists kept their cameras at their sides
until the coast was clear. I was as green
as ever, but the glow of green had gone,
leaving behind a coarse, infected skin
the colour of sick leaves, a look that made
a whole town shudder. Vanity is such
an unappealing feature that I tell
the story with a little stab of shame –
better sports than I would say, so what
if you are plagued with raw wounds or mixed feelings?
The city is the same, and you should make
a virtue of repose and meet it on
its own, sane terms. But when you go outside
and due to some alignment in the night
or stirring in yourself, you cannot walk
a block without a sight of green, the thrill
is hard to beat; your beauty is its beauty,
your hue the gossip of the neighborhood.
What is a hoax? Did I invent it all
deliriously? It was not as if
I stood atop a custom-built, tall building
and ordered crowds to let me call the shots
or else be shot; the process was more like
a tender secret thet the whole town keeps
with looks that say, we’re in on this together.
Tonight, my boils are bad. I never know
when skin will start to slough, and must take care,
when shaking hands, to keep my fingers firm
so that they come back whole. There is a look
of malice and derision in my eyes,
though I am kind. Tonight, a walk is not
the great event it was – for such a night
a leper schemes and dreams – but just a way
of getting from one sickbed to another.
Skulking from mean street to lazaretto
in an ill-fitting cape and in a hurry,
I am my own worst nightmare, I am
too strange to pity, and too green to love.
si notò meno. O invece, di più;
era come se quelli che si lagnano
quando passo vicino guardassero
a fondo finalmente accorgendosi
continuò a succhiar cedri.
me stesso riflesso in un negozio
e riconobbi il medesimo vecchio,
quel vecchio verde insulto agli occhi.
L’ho inventato
tutto nel delirio? Non era come
essere in cima a un palazzone
costruito per me e comandare
miei occhi, pur essendo io gentile.
verde all’amore.

weniger auffällig erscheinen ließ. Oder eigentlich, mehr;
und verzogen sich erschrocken oder erleichtert;

Riusciva a combinare in modo accattivante malinconia e umorismo.
