“And yet”

And yet – – but after death there’s no “and yet”.
Now we have seen you die; and had you burned,
I cannot aphorise “ what I have learned”
As neatly as I sort your desk, and set
The calendar for days you will not see.
“ Death doesn’t do you harm”, you chanced to say
One morning on the lawn, and straightway
Fear, young and furtive, took its roots in me
Which in these empty days now comes of age.
And yet – – because in life there is “ and yet” – –
What can I hope, except that you were right?

Eppure – – ma dopo la morte non c’e un „ eppure“.
Ora che ti abbiamo visto morire; e ti abbiamo cremato,
Non posso dire “cosa ho imparato”
Mentre sistemo la tua scrivania e
Giro il calendario per i giorni che tu non vedrai.
“ La morte non ti fa del male” dicesti
Una mattina sull’erba e, immediatamente, attecchì in me
La paura, giovane e subdola,
Che in questi giorni vuoti, invecchia.
Eppure – – perché nella vita c’e un “eppure” – –
Posso solo sperare che tu abbia avuto ragione.
