Aria di primavera
Giovine luce,
aria di primavera!
soffici nuvole bianche
ragnano il cielo puro:
chiama
la numerosa alterna
voce del mare.
Air of springtime
Young light,
air of springtime!
soft white clouds
cobweb the pure sky:
the plentiful,
alternate voice of the sea
is calling.

Pentecoste
Pentecoste
oh come tutto sarebbe felice
se potesse vanire
nel blando suono
delle campane.
Pentecost
Pentecost
afternoon bells
shiny green in the sunlight
sea turquoise with scattered sails clear clouds
soft breath of the olive tree woods
and the bells
with their neat mild touches
oh how happy would everything be
if only it could vanish
into the mild sound
of the bells.

Sospiro
Whisper
A brand-new whisper
will forever stay in my heart,
since before dawn I saw the moon in the East
spreading over the sea
the languid weave of a May dream
and Venus followed it
in an enchantment of ray and clearer sky:
the sea murmured on the shore:
and in a dark brown paleness the air smelled good
filled with Spring:
while the birds, amongst the tree branches
still mute, were waiting for daylight.

Cooking in the sunlight
Among a holm oak, a pine and an olive tree
there’s a circle of grass in the sun
with red cardoons withered thymes
unripe oat spikes dangling by the sea.
I can’t see anything but
this circle of grass high above the sea.
And I’m cooking in the sunlight
among flying butterflies
and scattered birdsongs
longing for the sea.
